Neloshan International is a registered organization that seeks to improve the wellbeing of single mothers within Shamata, in Nyandarua County, on the western side of Mount Kenya. Supporting single mothers with indigenous chickens is a strategy addressing low income levels among single mothers in the Shamata area.

Upon receiving the chickens and feed, the single mothers showed happiness and appreciation as they broke into song and ululations - an indication that they needed the support. Five months after receipt of the chickens, a beneficiary in one of the single moms groups named Nguba Bidii reported the project was a life changer. The women were joyous and narrated on how the project has helped them achieve their family objectives of supplementing their household nutritional requirements through consumption of the eggs. As well, selling eggs enabled them to generate income to meet other household needs - buying of soap, salt, cooking oil and purchasing school items for their children.

Gladys could not hide her joy as she explained how in the month of January 2021, she managed to pay for her grand child’s school fees with the income she received from the sale of eggs she had collected and accumulated.

“Chicken rearing is rewarding and a fast way to increasing one’s income if taken seriously. I have enough to feed my family and to sell. I pocket Ksh 900 every month from the sale of eggs,” a motivated Salome keeps encouraging her fellow single mums.
